Cardinal Lose Second Match of MPSF Play to #6 UC Santa Barbara

The Stanford Cardinal lost their second match of MPSF opening weekend play to #6 UC Santa Barbara with the scores of 21-30, 25-30, 21-30. The Cardinal drop to a 0-5 overall record and 0-2 in the MPSF while the Gauchos improve to 4-1, and 2-0 in conference play.

Stanford dropped the first game of the match with the score of 21-30. The team hit .393 for the game with Senior Matt Ceran having 5 kills on 7 attempts. The Gauchos overpowered Stanford by hitting an impressive .621 for the game. Santa Barbara's David Kennedy led the team with 9 kills on 10 attempts.

Junior Jesse Meredith went down with an ankle injury in the second game of the match on a tight ball. Brian Skinner came into the game on the outside. With cosistant sideout play, the Gauchos managed to pull away at the end with the score of 30-25.

Starting the third game was Sophomore Miki Groppi as he moved starting setter Kawika Shoji to the outside. Sophomore Jared Keller came into the match as Libero for the Cardinal. Three consecutive kills by the Gauchos late in the game brought them to game point with a 8 point lead, 29-21. They finished the game, 30-21.

Both Matt Ceran and Evan Romero led the Cardinal squad with 13 kills each. Setter/Outside Kawika Shoji finished with 29 assists and 2 kills. Santa Barbara's Evan Patak ended the match with 15 kills while David Kennedy hit .647 with 12 kills. Stanford will continue playing at home as they face #2 BYU on Friday January 19 in Maples Pavilion and Saturday,20 in Burnham Pavilion, both at 7:00PM.
