Cardinal Swept Again by Cougars

Second-ranked BYU swept Stanford for the second straight night Saturday evening in Burnham Pavilion in front of an energetic crowd of 837 fans. The loss dropped BYU's record to 0-7 overall, 0-4 in MPSF Play. BYU improved to 6-0, 4-0.

The Cougars took game one 24-30 with a tough effort from the Cardinal. Freshman Evan Romero led Stanford with 7 kills. Freshman Kawika Shoji added 10 assists and 3 digs on the game, however BYU's strong hitting at .520 and defense (8 team digs, to Stanford's 3) gave them the advantage in game one.

BYU maintained control of the match in game two. Junior Ivan Perez led the charge with 9 kills and a .727 hitting percentage on the game. Evan Romero once again led the Cardinal with 10 kills. Stanford rallied within two at 13-15, but the Cougars would not be denied.

Stanford started off game three with a kill by sophomore Brandon Williams that got the Cardinal fans back in the game. Stanford's first lead in the match since 1-0 came at 11-10 with a BYU hitting error. The Cardinal hung tough in the game and took a two point lead on the Cougar's at 20-18 forcing a BYU timeout. However BYU rallied back, taking a 24-23 lead. Stanford came back to tie the game at 27-all, before regaining the lead with a solo block by Junior Brian Skinner. The Cougars, refusing to accept defeat, rallied back with timely kill and service ace, both by sophomore Yosleyder Cala. BYU won game three 28-30.

Up next the Cardinal head to Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) to square off against the Mastodons both Friday and Saturday evening at 7:00pm.
