Stanford, Calif. - The Cardinal wrestling team fell in three duals today at the inaugural Stanford Duals in Burnham Pavilion. The Cardinal dropped a 27-11 decision to Columbia before falling to No. 23 Lehigh, 34-9, and conference rival UC Davis, 29-12. With the losses, Stanford drops to 2-5 overall and 1-1 in the Pac-10.
Against Columbia, junior Tanner Gardner won his first of three bouts on the day, winning by technical fall over Jerome Greco. Stanford dropped the next four matches, however, to fall behind, 17-5. Senior Brian Perry stopped the Lion run with a 10-5 overtime decision over Ricky Turk, picking up his 19th win of the season. Sophomore Luke Feist then highlighted the day for the Cardinal with his biggest win of the season, topping 11th-ranked Matt Palmer, 6-5. Columbia closed out the dual with three-straight wins, however, to secure the victory.
Against Lehigh, Gardner earned a decision over Matt Fisk for the second time this season, 9-2. Junior Scott Loescher picked up the only remaining win of the dual for the Cardinal, pinning Manuel Schubert in 3:54.
In the conference dual against UC Davis, Gardner earned another technical fall over Marcos Orozco, 18-1, to give Stanford an early lead. The Aggies earned a major decision at 133 pounds, but Rafael Chavez answered with a 13-4 major decision over Nexi Delgado to put the Cardinal up 9-4. The Aggies rallied, however, winning six of the next seven matches to earn the win. Freshman Zack Giesen picked up the remaining Cardinal victory, topping Jeff Prentice, 11-4.
In other Stanford Duals action, Lehigh topped UC Davis, 33-8, before Columbia heavyweight Kevin Lester pinned Broc Maffia of UC Davis to break a 16-16 tie and earn the 22-16 Lion win.
"The highlight of our match was Luke Feist beating No. 11 Matt Palmer, who was an NCAA qualifier last season," said Head Coach Kerry McCoy. "Overall, I'm very disappointed in the way we performed. We're better than what we showed, but our guys need to be able to step up and win the close ones and that didn't happen today. Hopefully, we'll learn from this and get better."
Stanford returns to Burnham next Friday for a 7 p.m. contest with San Francisco State.
