Atherton, Calif. - A trio of Cardinal freshmen placed at the Menlo College Invitational in Atherton today. Jake Johnson and Zack Giesen captured the first titles of their careers, earning first place at 174 pounds and 184 pounds, respectively. Cameron Teitelman placed for the first time in his collegiate career, taking second place at 133 pounds.
"I'm very happy that some of our guys decided to compete today," said Head Coach Kerry McCoy. "They wrestled really well and the results showed it. It's great to see the guys working hard and getting some positive results."
Johnson posted two technical falls and a pin to earn his spot in the 174-pound final, where he won by injury default. Giesen posted three-straight wins to earn the 184-pound title, topping Joffre Lander of Embry-Riddle in the championship bout. Teitelman posted a pair of decisions to advance to the 133-pound final, but dropped a 7-2 decision to Josh Williams of Southwestern Oregon Community College of take second place.
The Cardinal returns to action on Friday night, hosting San Francisco State at 7 p.m. in Burnham Pavilion.
