Portland, Ore. - The Stanford wrestling team split a pair of conference duals on the road today, falling to Oregon State in Corvallis and besting Portland State in Portland. In the afternoon contest, the Cardinal fell 31-13 to the Beavers, but rebounded with a decisive 36-9 victory over the Vikings. With one regular season dual remaining, the Cardinal is 7-7 overall and 5-3 in the Pac-10.
Against the No. 18 Beavers, Stanford jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead when junior 125-pounder Tanner Gardner pinned Jake Gonzales in 2:46. A Cardinal forfeit at 133 pounds tied the score, and Oregon State took the lead with a win by fall at 141 pounds and a win by decision at 149 pounds.
Junior Josh Zupancic brought the Cardinal back into contention with an 8-0 major decision over Keegan Davis at 157 pounds, but the Beavers won four of the final five bouts to run away with the 31-13 victory. Freshman Zack Giesen picked up the remaining win for the Cardinal at 184 pounds, defeating Kyle Bressler, the fourth-ranked wrestler in the Pac-10, 6-2.
Against Portland State, the Cardinal set the tone early and won eight of the nine matches to post its largest conference win of the season. Gardner recorded his second pin of the day and his fastest of the season, defeating Brad Caldwell in 1:36. Gardner, ranked No. 3 in the nation, improves to 32-3 on the season and leads the team with 11 wins by fall.
After a Stanford forfeit at 133 pounds, Matt Kim posted his first career major decision over Greg Einerson at 141 pounds, 15-7, and Tyler Parker followed with his first major decision of the season at 149 pounds.
Zupancic pinned Steven Dailey in 2:16 at 157 pounds to give the Cardinal a 20-6 lead, but Stanford's Scott Loescher was edged, 3-2, by Dale Seley to stop the Stanford run.
Stanford battled back, however, and won the final four bouts to close out the solid win. Luke Feist dominated Brian Lemmon at 174 pounds, and won by technical fall, 19-2. Giesen notched his 26th win of the season at 184 pounds, with a major decision over Jake Schneider, 18-5, to seal the Stanford victory. Giesen now sits third on the Stanford all-time freshman win chart, and has won 11-straight.
Jared Boyer continued Stanford's winning ways at 197 pounds, earning a major decision over Portland State's Keena Washington, 12-3. Phillip Doerner closed out the day with a 3-1 overtime decision over Zack Smith.
Stanford returns to the mat Friday night for its final home dual of the season against Arizona State. Action begins at 7 p.m. in the Ford Center.
