Stanford Cardinal Drop Close Five Game Match to USC

For their second match on the road this week, Stanford dropped a thrilling five game match to the USC Trojans. The Cardinal fell to the No. 14 ranked Trojans with scores of 28-30, 30-27, 25-30, 30-27, 5-15 at USC's Galen Center Friday Night.

Freshman Evan Romero had 22 kills and 6 blocks for the match. Outside hitter Matt Ceran added 16 kills, 6 digs and 5 blocks for the Cardinal. Brandon Williams finished with a .333 hitting percentage with 11 kills and 7 blocks.

The Trojan's Juan Figueroa came up with 23 kills, 13 digs and 5 blocks in the five games. C.J Schellenberg added 21 kills.

Stanford had a solid showing defensively at the net as they finished with 16 blocks to USC's 11.5. The Trojan's outdug the Cardinal 54 to 32 and ended the match hitting .270 to Stanford's .145.

Stanford started on top in game one, leading 26-25. After two Cardinal hitting errors and a kill by USC's Figueroa, the Trojans captured the win. The second game started again with Stanford on top, 8-3. The Cardinal kept the lead and eventually took game two, 30-27. Game three was taken by USC as they hit .300 to Stanford's .091. Another 8-3 lead in the fourth game gave the Cardinal the same results as game two, and an eventual win. The fifth game was all USC as they took a 9-1 margin and controlled the last of the game, finishing 15-5.

The match drops Stanford to 1-17 overall and 1-12 in the MPSF. USC improves to5-9 overall and 4-7 in league play.
