Stanford defeated ASU 16-7 in the opening match this morning at Avery Pool. The Cardinal exploded on offense, led once again by Lauren Silver with four goals. Jacquelyn Gauthier, Kelsey Holshouser, Katie Hansen and Jessica Steffens each score two goals in the match. Providing one goal apiece were Kelly Eaton, Heather West and Christina Hewko. Freshman Kate Heddleston got the start in goal for Stanford, blocking six shots in the match.

The action began quickly as ASU scored the first goal after only 56 seconds had elapsed. The Cardinal responded with goals from Silver and Hansen to take a one-goal lead. ASU tied the game midway through the first quarter, but Stanford answered once again with goals from West, Eaton and Silver, retaking the lead 5-2.

Second quarter excitement began even faster than the first, as Hewko tossed one in for Stanford with only 45 seconds expired. The Cardinal then got two goals in a row from Steffens, moving the Stanford lead to 8-2. ASU picked up the pace with a goal of their own, but it was Silver responding again with another goal at the 3:05 mark in the second quarter. The teams then traded goals, with ASU scoring first. Hansen would not be denied however, as she scored her second goal of the game, giving Stanford a 10-4 lead at the half.

After the break, ASU got things started with their fifth goal of the match. Stanford came right back with a goal from Gregorka, only 29 seconds after ASU had scored. The Sun Devils kept fighting and snuck one past Heddleston for a goal. It was Stanford's turn to respond once again, as Silver scored her fourth goal of the game. Shortly following Silver was Holshouser with a goal, giving the Cardinal a 13-6 lead going into the final quarter.

The fourth quarter belonged to Stanford as Gauthier came alive, scoring her first two goals in the match and Holshouser shot in for the second straight quarter. ASU managed to score the final goal of the game with 22 seconds left on the clock, but ultimately fell to Stanford by a score of 16-7.

With a record a 2-1, third ranked Stanford will advance to the third place game at 3:10pm where they take on fourth ranked Cal. No. 7 ASU will play in the seventh place game at 12:30pm with a record of 0-3 as they face No. 20 Indiana.
