New York, NY - Two back-to-back weekends in the Northeast left us more appreciative of the beautiful weather we have at Stanford. A storm of "historic significance" was set to hit the eastern shore over the weekend, slamming New York and Rhode Island with 40+ knot winds and flooding/freezing rain. Weather forecasters warned viewers to stock up on non-perishables and review local evacuation routes.
In Rhode Island on Saturday, there was no sign of such a storm as Edward Conrad and Becca Levin performed well in A division at the Moody Trophy hosted by the University of Rhode Island. In B division, Junior skipper Craig Page and freshman crew Megan Grove debuted in their first east coast event. In the puffy, shifty Westerly Conrad and Levin secured the top spot in A division by they end of the 7th race with consistent finishes, over half in the top three. Page and Grove did not quite figure out the tricky venue, and the Cardinal finished the day in 4th overall. Racing on Sunday was cancelled due to high winds and freezing rain squalls, so the team retained it's 4th place finish.
Down in the pit of Long Island, the sun prevailed showing no signs of the impending storm either. An 8-12 knot Northwesterly breeze looked promising, but slowly died out over the course of the day. Emery Wager and Leigh Hammel started in A Division for the Card. Brian Haines and Kelly McKenna sailed B Division and TJ Tullo represented Stanford in Lasers in C Division. The team got off to a slow start, and was in 12th at noon, but made up some ground after lunch, finishing the day 8th.
In the morning on Sunday, the rain was coming down hard, but the big breeze was surprisingly absent. The race committee got off another set before abandoning the day. Stanford remained in 8th.
The Women's team was at home resting up for the National qualifiers, which are taking place this weekend at Treasure Island.
