Bruch To Play For Second Straight Pac-10 Title

April 28, 2007

For the second consecutive year, Matt Bruch will play for the Pac-10 men's singles championship. The Cardinal sophomore, who suffered through an injury-plagued season, beat Pierre Mouillan of Cal, 6-4, 6-2 in today's semifinals in Ojai to earn a spot in tomorrow's singles final against Alex Slovic of Washington. Also today, Bruch and Blake Muller advanced to tomorrow's doubles final in the main draw while Eric McKean and David Ryan will play for the invitational doubles title.

Bruch, who entered the Pac-10's unranked, is attempting to become the third Cardinal player to win back-to-back Pac-10 championships. He is also trying to give the Stanford it's fourth consecutive conference champion. Sam Warburg won the title in 2004 and '05 and Bruch won it last year. Stanford's other Pac-10 champions include Patrick McEnroe (1987), Alex O'Brien (1991, '92), Scott Humphries (1995), Bob Bryan (1997), Paul Goldstein (1998), Ryan Wolters (1999), Geoff Abrams (2000) along with Warburg and Bruch.

Bruch and Muller won an 8-5 semifinal match over Matt Brooklyn and Wes Miller of Arizona State to advance to the men's doubles final tomorrow against Robert Farah and Kaes Van't Hof of USC. Stanford's last Pac-10 doubles championship came in 2005 when Warbug and K.C. Corkery won the title.

The Cardinal will be looking for its third Pac-10 title when McKean and Ryan play for the invitational championship. They defeated Mouillon and Daniel Sebescan of Cal today in the semifinals, 8-6, and will face Derek Drabble and Andy Kuharszky of Washington. The Huskie's duo knocked off Jeff Zeller and Andrew Eklov of UCLA, 8-1, in today's other semifinal match.
