Williamsburg, Va. - The nationally ranked Stanford men's golf team shot a five-under 275 to lead by two strokes after the first round at the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships at the at the par 70, 6,803-yard Golden Horseshoe Gold Course, hosted by Virginia Commonwealth University.
Coastal Carolina sits in second place at three-under 277. There is a three-way tie for third, as Florida, Minnesota and Texas each shot two-under 278. Charlotte was the only other team to break par at one-under 279, good for sixth place.
The Cardinal had three golfers shoot par or below. Junior Rob Grube (Hinsdale, Ill.) topped the field with a six-under 64. Grube had no bogeys and six birdies, including five birdies on the front nine.
"It was a dream start," said Grube. "I played really well. It was a great start for the weekend. The course is accessible. You are penalized for bad shots and rewarded for good shots."
Sophomore Daniel Lim (Cupertino, Calif.) came in at one-under 69 and is tied for 15th on the individual leaderboard while senior Zack Miller (San Rafael, Calif.) shot even-par 70 and is tied for 29th. Senior Matt Savage is tied for 66th with a two over 72. Freshman Joseph Bramlett is tied for 146th with a 78 on the afternoon.
