Chicago, Ill. - Paced by the top-ten finishes of senior Rob Grube and junior Dodge Kemmer, the Stanford men's golf team placed fifth at the 2007 Fighting Illini Invitational at the Olympia Fields Golf Club today, with a three-round total of 876 (+36). Seventh-ranked Oklahoma State won the tournament with a 17-over, 857. Rounding out the top-five were No. 23 Texas (864), Indiana (870) and No. 8 Florida State (874).
Kemmer highlighted the tournament for top-ranked Stanford, tying for seventh in a career-best finish. The junior recorded Stanford's only under-par round of the tournament yesterday (69) and finished with a 7-over, 217. Grube (217) also tied for seventh for his second top-10 finish of the year, while freshman Sihwan Kim finished in a tie for 15th at 9-over, 219 for his second top-25 finish of the year. Rounding out the Cardinal players were sophomore Joseph Bramlett (+13, 223) in 35th and sophomore Jordan Cox (+19, 229) in a tie for 50th.
Oklahoma State's Ricky Fowler won the tournament with a 7-under, 203, and was one of just two golfers in the 60-player field to finish the tournament under par. Stanford turned in a 17-over, 297 in the final round to hold onto its fifth place spot.
"Our guys were a little disappointed with how we played, but there are a lot of things we can learn from," said Head Coach Conrad Ray. "It was a very difficult course, but it showed us that we need to work on our short game and save shots around the green. We felt we could have played better, but it's a good time of year to learn what we need to do to improve and identify what our strengths and weaknesses are."?Stanford will continue fall play later this month, defending its title at The Prestige at PGA West in La Quinta, Calif., Oct. 15-16. Last season, Stanford earned a two-stroke win at the tournament, with Cardinal Zack Miller winning top medalist honors.
