Berkeley, Calif - Freshman Greg Hirshman overcame Blake Wardman and Pioter Bilaj to advance to the semifinals of consolation play while the lone Cardinal doubles squad lost in their second round match at the Chandler Cup Invite hosted by Cal at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
Hirshman began the day by defeating Fresno State's Blake Wardman 6-2, 6-3 to advance into the quarterfinals. Pioter Bilaj of Washington and Hirshman fought to a two set draw 6-2, 1-6 to take the match to a deciding tiebreak, where Hirshman emerged with a 1-0 (6) victory. With his victory, Hirshman advanced into the consolation semifinals verses Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan of Washington.
Doubles team Hirshman and sophomore Kevin Kaiser fell to second seeded Andy Koharsky and Nedunchezhiyan of Washington 8-6. Hirshman and Kaiser had handily defeated their first round opponents Jacek Twarowski and Stefan Nikolic of Loyola Marymount 8-0 in the first round yesterday afternoon.
Kaiser and senior Phil Kao both lost their second round singles matches yesterday, ending their tournament run.
