Both the men's and women's fencing teams went 4-1 on their weekend trip to the United States Air Force Academy for the 2008 NCAA Western Invitational. The men tied Notre Dame for the best record of the weekend, while the women trailed only Notre Dame who went 5-0.
The men got off to a strong start by defeating the University of San Diego 15-12, before edging Notre Dame 14-13. The win over Notre Dame was of the come from behind variety as the Cardinal won eight of the nine bouts in the sabre. The Cardinal's lone loss would come to the host, Air Force in another squeaker, 14-13. The Cardinal wrapped up the weekend with blowout wins over Cal State Fullerton (25-2) and Florida (22-5).
On the women's side Stanford got off to a good start by beating the University of San Diego, 15-12. They would then suffer their lone defeat at the hands of Notre Dame when the Irish defeated the Cardinal 18-9. Stanford fought back to defeat Air Force 11-7 before routing Cal State Fullerton, 25-4. In their final bout of the weekend, the Cardinal defeated Florida, 15-12.
The Cardinal next compete February 2 and 3 at the Northwestern University at the Mid West Invitational. It will be their final competition of the year before heading to the NCAA Regional's.
