San Francisco, Calif. - Seven Cardinal wrestlers took to the mats at the California Collegiate Wrestling Invitational hosted by San Francisco State today. Led by 165-pounder Kyle Barrett, the young wrestlers gained experience against local and Pac-10 competition.
Six of the seven wrestlers were freshmen, and most were seeing their first competition since the Menlo Open in early November.
Barrett highlighted the day with a 2-2 record. The Las Vegas, Nev. native edged Cal State Fullerton's CJ Knowland, 2-1, in his opening match before falling to eventual champion Daniel Atondo of Cal State Bakersfield. Barrett battled back with his first career major decision in the consolation bracket.
At 133 pounds, freshman Blair Matsuura also picked up a major decision on the day, defeating Carson's Owen Craugh, 12-4.
The Cardinal continues its Pac-10 season on Friday, battling the Oregon Ducks in a dual meet in Eugene at 7 p.m. On Sunday, the squad will take on defending Pac-10 Champion Oregon State in Corvallis at 1 p.m.
