LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Stanford men's gymnastics team completed the final day of competition at the Winter Cup Challenge in Las Vegas, Nev. yesterday on a very positive note. The seven Cardinal gymnasts who advanced to Saturday's final round fared very well, with six men finishing in the top half of the total 42 gymnasts in the finals. Stanford's highest finish was earned by senior David Sender, who placed sixth.
Sender finished the competition with a combined all-around score of 175.200 (=87.800+87.400). Sender was the highest placing NCAA athlete, with only Team Chevron members finishing ahead of him, including 2004 Olympic gold medalist Paul Hamm, who captured the Winter Cup Challenge crown. Sender's highest score of the competition came on vault, where he recorded an outstanding 16.100.
Junior Bryant Hadden also contributed a great effort for the Cardinal, achieving 12th place overall, with a combined all-around score of 167.700 (= 82.800+84.900). Freshman Ryan Lieberman was not far behind in 14th place, notching a 165.900 (=82.050+83.850) combined all-around.
Freshmen Josh Dixon and Tim Gentry, along with redshirt junior Sho Nakamori, finished 19th, 20th, and 21st, respectively. Redshirt senior Dylan Carney, the only Stanford gymnast who did not compete in all six events, captured his highest score of the day on vault (15.150).
The Winter Cup Challenge serves as a re-ranking competition for the U.S. Men's Senior National Team. Based on performance at the Winter Cup Challenge, seven gymnasts will be named to the Senior National Team in the coming days after deliberation by the Men's Program Committee. The seven members of the 2007 World Championship Team, including Horton, automatically retain their national team status.
Stanford will next compete on February 16 at home at Burnham Pavilion at 7 p.m. against the No. 13 Nebraska Cornhuskers.
