The Stanford men's and women's fencing teams traveled to Northwestern University to take part in the Mid West Invitational over the weekend of February 2 and 3. The Cardinal faired well against difficult competition.
The Stanford men's fencing team went 6-4 over the weekend against some highly ranked competition. The Cardinal got off to rough start, facing the top three teams in the nation. First, Stanford fell to Penn State, 17-10. Then they lost a close match to Notre Dame 15-12 before falling to Ohio State 20-7.
Stanford got back on track, however winning six of their final seven matches. The Cardinal beat Johns Hopkins 14-13 to get in the winning column. Next, Stanford blew out host Northwestern 16-5 and Wayne State 21-3.
Stanford got two more wins over North Carolina, 16-11 and Detroit Mercy, 20-1 before they fell to Duke in a close match, 14-13. Stanford finished the weekend against Cleveland State with a 19-5 win.
For the weekend Max Murphy and Lucas Janson both went 17-10 in men's sabre. Phil Arredondo totaled a 15-8 record in men's foil, while Richard Fulton went 14-7 in men's foil.
On the women's side Stanford went 6-5 for the weekend. Stanford opened with a loss to Penn State, 15-9 before reeling off three consecutive victories. Those wins were over Cleveland State, 18-0, Lawrence Academy, 18-1, and Duke, 16-8.
Stanford's next opponent would be Temple and it would prove difficult, falling 14-10. The Cardinal got back in the winning column with after taking care of Detroit Mercy, 15-1.
Three of the next four matches would be losses for Stanford, though as they fell to Notre Dame, 19-5 before beating North Carolina, 13-11. The Cardinal then suffered blow losses at the hands of Wayne State, 22-3 and Ohio State, 19-5. Stanford finished the trip with a win over Farleigh Dickinson University, 17-1 to push their record above .500 for the trip.
Stanford was led by Eva Jellison who went 31-6 on the weekend in women's sabre. Sarah Parker also performed well with a 25-9 record in sabre. In the epee Brittany Leader went 22-9, while Rachel Becker was 23-11.
Next up for Cardinal fencing is the NCAA West Regional on Sunday, March 2 at Cal State Fullerton. Stanford has qualified eleven men and eight women for the competition.
