The Stanford women's golf team concluded play on Wednesday at the 2008 Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge by playing their best rounds of the tournament. Stanford shot a 10-over-par 294 to finish at 48-over-par 900 for the tournament good for fifth place. The quality play on Wednesday helped Stanford move up from eighth where they sat after round two.
First round leader, UCLA came back to play the low round of the day after relinquishing their lead on day two. They played rounds of 5-over-par 289 to finish at 24-over-par 876 for the tournament and a seven stroke advantage over runner-up, Florida. The Gators were second with a final score of 31-over-par 883, while USC was third with a score of 35-over-par 887, and Arizona State was fourth with a score of 37-over-par 889. Stanford leap-frogged Wake Forest, Pepperdine, and Texas A&M to move into fifth.
The medalist for the tournament was Natalie Sheary of Wake Forest who shot a final round 72 to finish with a 2-over-par score of 215 for a one stroke victory over five other golfers at 3-over-par.
The low round of the day for Stanford was also the low round of the tournament for the Cardinal and it belonged to Mari Chun. After struggling on Monday, Chun began to find her form on Tuesday and dominated the Palos Verdes course on Wednesday with a 1-under-par 70. The score gave Chun a three-day total of 15-over-par 228 and a tie for 26th, a remarkable achievement considering Chun sat in a tie for 73rd after the first round.
Angela King was the low golfer in the tournament for Stanford, playing the most consistent golf for the Cardinal. King's final round of 5-over-par 76 gave King a three-day total of 8-over-par 221 for the tournament. Her play earned her a tie for 10th place, just six strokes off the medalist honor and her first career top-10 finish.
Also playing well for the tournament was Catherina Wang who shot her best round of the tournament with a 4-over-par 75 on Wednesday. This gave Wang a three-day total of 14-over-par 227 and tie for 23rd.
Rebecca Durham came back from a tough round yesterday to shoot her best round of the tournament, a 3-over-par 74 that included six birdies. Durham's round gave her a three-day total of 21-over-par 234 and a tie for 50th in the tournament.
Finally, Ki-Shui Liao capped her tournament with an 8-over-par 79 for a total of 20-over-par 233. This put Liao in a tie for 45th for the week.
Stanford's fifth place finish was their best effort of the year. Previously in October they had finished seventh at the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational in Sammamish, Wash. Stanford will return to action in two weeks when they travel to Tucson, Ariz. to play in the Arizona Wildcat Invitational from Feb. 25 to Feb. 27.
