IRVINE, Calif. - Balance was the theme of the day Saturday at the Irvine Tournament, as the No. 2 Stanford women's water polo team had nine different players score goals in victories of 11-3 over No. 16 UC San Diego and 15-8 against No. 7 San Jose State.

The Cardinal (8-1) now advance to Sunday's semifinal round at Anteater Pool, taking on the USC Women of Troy at 11:45 a.m. A victory would advance Stanford to the tournament title game at 5:15 p.m., while a defeat would send it to the third-place contest scheduled for 4 p.m.

Jacquelyn Gauthier led all Cardinal players with seven goals Saturday, posting her second and third hat tricks of the season. Megan May added a pair of goals in each contests, while Kira Hillman, Kelsey Holshouser, and Lauren Silver each scored three times on the day.

In the cage, freshman Amber Oland was a force once again, allowing just eight goals over the two games, and stopping 12 shots.

Stanford cruised in the opener, as Gauthier's three goals led all players in the 11-3 victory over UC San Diego. The Cardinal were able to get out to a quick 3-0 first-period lead thanks to goals from Silver, Hillman, and Krueger, and Oland's three saves in the second period helped keep UCSD at bay.

Despite leading only 4-1 at the break after Gauthier's second-period goal, the Cardinal finished strong, out-scoring the Tritons 7-2 in the second half. For the contest, Stanford converted four extra-attacker goals, including three in the second half.

In the afternoon, Stanford faced off against the seventh-ranked San Jose State Spartans for the right to advance to Sunday's semifinal round.

Three of Gauthier's game-leading four goals came in 6-on-5 situations, as the Cardinal converted an impressive nine of its 13 extra-attacker opportunities.

It was a 5-1 second period for the Cardinal that broke open what had been a close 3-2 score after one, with Koree Blyleven, Kelly Eaton, Gauthier, Holshouser, and Kim Krueger finding the back of the cage. The Cardinal kept up the pressure in the second half, scoring seven more goals, as Emily Clopp scored her first of the day, and Oland provided the defensive highlight by blocking a five-meter penalty shot with 6:42 left to play.
