Long Beach, Calif./Federal Way, Wash. - No. 2 Stanford cut over half the deficit the Cardinal started the final day of competition with but still finished second to Arizona at the conclusion of the Pac-10 Women's Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday. Arizona's 1501 points were enough to hold off Stanford, who finished with 1472 and was followed by California (1262), UCLA (938), USC (779), Arizona State (727.5), Washington (623), Oregon State (377) and Washington State (337.5) in the final standings.
The swimming portion of the meet took place at the Belmont Plaza Pool in Long Beach, while the divers competed at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.
Elaine Breeden highlighted Stanford's performances when she broke her own school record and the Pac-10 Meet mark to win the 200 fly in an NCAA `A' time of 1:52.27 that is also the nation's top time in the event this season.
Elizabeth Durot started the Cardinal off right in the 1650 free by placing second with a NCAA `A' time of 16:05.92 that moved her up three spots to No. 5 on Stanford's list of all-time top performers in the event.
The 200 back was next and Julia Smit's third place showing in an NCAA `A' time of 1:57.02 highlighted a Stanford threesome in the championship finals that also included Laura Wadden (1:58.56, 1:58.14 prelims) and Andrea Axtell (1:59.02, 1:58.34 prelims) in sixth and seventh place, respectively.
California's Lauren Boyle (1650 free, 16:03.51) and Lauren Rogers (200 back, 1:55.33) were winners in the first two events of the evening's finals session.
Brooke Bishop (49.02) and Kate Dwelley (49.22) took seventh and eighth in the 100 free in NCAA `A' times but Arizona had two swimmers ahead of the Cardinal duo, including winner Lacey Nymeyer (48.20).
USC's Rebecca Soni provided the highlight of the final session of the meet when she broke her own NCAA record with a time of 2:06.11 to win the 100 breast. Stanford finished second and third in the event with the NCAA `A' efforts of Liz Smith (2nd, 2:09.79) and Caroline Bruce (3rd, 2:10.51).
Breeden followed with her 200 fly win before California took the meet-ending 400 free relay when a team of Madison Kennedy, Hannah Wilson, Emily Silver and Dana Vollmer completed the event in a Pac-10 meet record mark of 3:13.22. Stanford was third in 3:16.00 with Bishop, Dwelley, Smith and Breeden swimming for the Cardinal. Both marks met the NCAA `A' standard.
Stanford finished the Pac-10 meet with four individual champions as Breeden's win on Saturday was preceded by Sarah Ohr (1-meter) on Thursday, as well as Kate Dwelley (200 free) and Meg Hostage (3-meter diving) on Friday.
"It was obviously a very successful meet for our divers," said head diving coach Dr. Rick Schavone. "We had two divers final in all three events, but we still have improvements to make before the NCAA Zone E Meet."
Stanford's divers will compete at the NCAA Zone E Diving Championships in Oklahoma City, OK, from Thursday-Saturday, March 13-15. Qualifying divers will join Stanford's swimmers at the NCAA Championships in Columbus, OH, the following Thursday-Saturday, March 20-22.
