NCAA Tournament Second Round
Anaheim, Calif.
Making its 16th appearance in the NCAA Tournament, Stanford improved to 21-14. Stanford advances to the Sweet 16 for the first time since an Elite Eight appearance in 2001. The Cardinal claimed the 1942 NCAA title, reached the Final Four in 1998 and also moved on to the Sweet 16 in 1997. Stanford's 28 victories rank third-best in school history, matching the 1941-42 squad that finished 28-4 en route to capturing the NCAA championship. The program record for wins is 31, established during the 2000-01 campaign. Stanford is now 2-2 in overtime games this year. Mitch Johnson dished out a school-record 16 assists, topping the previous mark of 13 set by Brevin Knight on five different occasions. Johnson's total also equaled the second-most assists in NCAA Tournament history. The record is 18 by UNLV's Mark Wade in a 1987 national semifinal game against Indiana. Mitch Johnson's three-pointer at the 18:31 mark of the first half was his first career NCAA Tournament basket in three games. Trent Johnson was ejected for the first time in his four-year tenure as Stanford head coach. Johnson has received five technical fouls this year, all of those coming since Feb. 14. Brook Lopez notched his fourth 30-point game of the year. Stanford was outrebounded (45-38) for only the sixth time this year. Stanford finished 19-28 from the charity stripe compared to Marquette's 9-12 mark. Robin Lopez finished with 18 points and has scored in double-figures in nine out of the last 11 games. Stanford is 16-0 when scoring at least 70 points this year. Marquette's Jerel McNeal is only the second player to pour in 30 points against Stanford this year, joining Jerryd Bayless of Arizona (31 back on Feb. 16).
