Cardinal Finishes In 11th Place At The United States Collegiate Championship

March 26, 2008

ALPHARETTA, Ga. - The ninth-ranked Stanford men's golf team finished in 11th place today after the third and final round of a tough United States Collegiate Championship tournament at The Golf Club of Georgia. The Cardinal finished with 897 strokes total, putting them 33-over-par collectively.

Cold and windy conditions prevailed over the mornings of the three day tournament, and each morning's start was delayed by at least 30 minutes in order to let the frost clear from the course. Eventually, by the third day, afternoon conditions warmed into the 70-degree range. Stanford struggled early in the tournament, holding 13th place after each of the first two rounds, but got better each day of the tournament, shaving nine strokes off their first round score of 310 in the second round, and an additional 15 strokes in the third round. Even with today's two-under par 286 performance, Stanford's best of the tournament, it wouldn't be enough to break the Cardinal into a top-ten finish at the tournament, as fourth-ranked Charlotte grabbed the tenth spot with a 25-over-par 889.

Freshman Steve Ziegler posted the best finish for Stanford, and his best finish overall as a Cardinal golfer, tying for tenth place overall with UCLA's No. 11 Kevin Chappell and Brigham Young's Esteban Calisto, shooting a two-over-par three day total of 218. Ziegler shot his best round of the tournament on the third day, recording a four-under 68. Fellow freshmen Sihwan Kim, ranked tenth in the nation, finished in the top-25, drawing for 25th with Charlotte's second-ranked Jonas Enander Hedin and East Tennessee State's No. 33 Gareth Shaw, shooting a five-over-par 221.

Fifth-ranked Southern California, after gaining the top spot on the leaderboard after the second round, went on to retain their lead and capture the tournament crown witha five-under-par 864. Sixth-ranked Oklahoma State took second, while top-ranked Alabama placed third. Oklahoma State's No. 57 Trent Leon captured the individual tournament crown, with a eight-under-par three day total of 208.

The Cardinal will next take to the course on April 19 and 20, when they will host the U.S. Intercollegiate at the Stanford Golf Course on campus.
