After three days of record setting swimming, Stanford had a few fast swims left on Saturday evening to hold strong and finish third at the NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships from the King County Aquatics Center in Federal Way, Wash.
added his second individual NCAA Championship of the meet to help propel Stanford on the meet's final night. Stanford finished with 344 points, shy of the 500.5 of Arizona who won the NCAA Championship for the first time in men's swimming. Texas finished second with 406 points. Just behind the Cardinal were arch-rival California in fourth with 332.5 points and five-time defending champ, Auburn who was fifth with 316 points.
For a second straight night won an individual national title in the breaststroke. On Saturday it was the 200 breast where Kornfeld turned in a personal best time of 1:53.11. The time is second all-time in Stanford history, trailing only who swam time of 1:52.71 in 2005. Kornfeld became the first Stanford swimmer to win two individual events since won the 200 back and 200 IM in 2002.
Stanford displayed outstanding depth in the 200 breast as finished fifth with a time of 1:55.77 and finished eighth with a time of 1:58.09. In the consolation final finished 11th with a time of 1:56.64.
Completing a terrific meet full of big PR's was who bettered his prelim time in the 200 fly to finish third. Beal's time of 1:42.79 came dangerously close to the Stanford all-time record, but he will instead have to settle for second all-time behind Pablo Morales who swam a time of 42.60 in 1987, the oldest record on the books for the Cardinal.
Gil Stovall of Georgia won the event in an NCAA record time of 1:41.33.
The other swimmer in a championship final was in the 200 back where he finished seventh with a time of 1:42.67. Patrick Schirk of Pennsylvania won the event with a time of 1:41.02.
Also swimming Saturday night for Stanford was in the 1650 free. Mosko finished 13th with a time of 15:04.72. Sebastien Rouault of Georgia won the event with a time 14:26.86.
In the final relay of the meet, Stanford finished fourth in the 400 free relay with a season best time of 2:51.46. Arizona won the relay with a time of 2:49.01.
The other finals conducted on Saturday were the 100 free and platform diving, but Stanford did not have any qualifiers. Cesar Cielo of Auburn won the 100 free in an NCAA record time of 40.92 seconds. Cielo was named athlete of the meet following the competition.
Platform diving was won by Sean Moore of Ohio State with a meet record 478.20 points. Stanford's was eliminated in the prelims where he finished 20th.
The conclusion of the NCAA Championships finishes the collegiate season for Stanford. Throughout the season Stanford continued to add to its outstanding swimming legacy with a 27th consecutive Pac-10 Championship as well as a 27th straight year of placing fourth or better at the NCAA Championships.
