CLAREMONT, Calif. - No. 2 Stanford closed its weekend on a winning note Sunday afternoon, capturing a pair of decisions in Southern California. The Cardinal (14-3) opened the day with an 11-5 victory at Pomona-Pitzer, then finished things off with a 15-4 win against Claremont-Mudd Scripps (0-5).
Chelsea Smith-Carmichael scored four goals on the day, including her first collegiate hat trick against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, to lead the Cardinal. Megan May and Kim Krueger each scored three goals on the day as 12 different Stanford players found the cage over the two contests.
Freshman Kim Hall did the lion's share of work in the Stanford cage, making eight saves over three quarters of play in the opener, then stopping seven shots while playing the full contest against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. Amber Oland started against Pomona-Pitzer, stopping a shot and not yielding a goal in the first quarter of action.
Stanford bolted to a 4-0 lead after one in the morning against the Sagehens, then kept the pressure up throughout the contest on the way to victory. May and Heather West each scored twice, while individual goals were turned in by Koree Blyleven, Kelly Eaton, Kira Hillman, Kelsey Holshouser, Krueger, Lauren Silver, and Smith-Carmichael.
In the afternoon, the Cardinal opened strong once more, scoring five first-period goals and taking an 8-2 lead by halftime. Behind Smith-Carmichael's hat trick, as well as two goals apiece from Eaton, Jenna Gunderson, and Krueger, the Cardinal cruised to the 15-4 win. Blyleven, Emily Clopp, Hillman, Alex Koran, May, and Silver all chipped in goals, as well.
Stanford will now take a 15-day hiatus from game action for final exams, and will return to the tank March 24, traveling to Hawai'i to battle the Rainbow Wahine.
