STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford men's water polo team, long a dominant program in the pool, was lauded on Monday by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) for being among the most dominant programs in the classroom, claiming the third-best grade-point average in the nation (3.34) and landing nine student-athletes on the Academic All-America list.
Senior goalkeeper and All-America pick Sandy Hohener topped the list of all student-athletes with a GPA of 4.07 in the"Outstanding" category. Sophomore Sage Wright, a 2007 All-America First Team selection, also earned "Outstanding" honors with a GPA of 3.75.
Forrest Schwartz (3.68), Will Hindle-Katel (3.64), Ryan Fortune (3.61), Michael Bury (3.59), and Cody Wiesen (3.56)were all bestowed "Superior" status by the ACWPC, while Steven Wright (3.40) and Will Smith (3.33) earned "Excellent" recognition.
Stanford finished the 2007 season with an overall mark of 17-8 (5-3 MPSF) and finished third in the MPSF regularseason standings. Six Cardinal players, Sage Wright (First Team), Hindle-Katel (Second Team), Bury (Third Team), Drac Wigo (honorable mention), Janson Wigo (honorable mention), and Hohener (honorable mention), were named ACWPC All-Americans following the season.
