Stanford Qualifies For NCAA Championships With Sixth-Place West Regional Finish

STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 11 Stanford men's golf team will return to the NCAA Championships to defend its crown thanks to a sixth-place finish at the NCAA West Regional in Bremerton, Wash. Stanford shot a three-under-par 285, their best round of the tournament, in Satuday's final round to clinch its bid to next weekend's championships.

The 2008 NCAA Men's Golf Championships will be hosted by Purdue University at the Kampen Course in West Lafayette, Ind. from May 28-31.

Stanford finished 14-over-par, shooting rounds of 296, 297, and 285 for a total of 878 strokes. Including Stanford, six Pac-10 teams out of the eight in the NCAA West Regional advanced to the NCAA Championships. No. 2 Southern California took the outright title, finishing two-under-par with 862 strokes total. No. 28 Oregon (second), Washington (fourth), No. 4 UCLA (fifth), and No. 10 Arizona State (eighth), also finished in the top-10.

The Cardinal was paced by No. 11 freshman Sihwan Kim, who recorded eight birdies in his round today and stroked a four-under par 68. Kim finished fifth with a three-round total of four-under-par 212.

No. 56 senior Rob Grube followed just behind Kim, tying for sixth on the leaderboard with Southern California's Tom Glissmeyer with a three-under-par 213.

Also advancing to next weekend's NCAA Championships out of the NCAA West Regional were No. 14 Clemson, Saint Mary's (CA), No. 32 San Diego State, and No. 36 Texas.

Oregon's Joey Benedetti did not concede his lead, and took the top place on the leaderboard, finishing with a nine-under-par 207.

STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 11 Stanford men's golf team moved up two slots on the leaderboard today, and is currently tied for seventh place with No. 45 Pepperdine and unranked Kentucky after two rounds of play at the NCAA West Regional. The Cardinal collectively shot a nine-over-par 297 today on the Olympic Course at the Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash., and have a total of 593 for the tournament, 11 back of No. 2 Southern California, who overtook the lead from No. 48 Oregon, and four behind Washington and No. 4 UCLA, who are tied for fourth.

No. 11 freshman Sihwan Kim jumped up five places and is now tied with teammate No. 56 Rob Grube, who fell eight notches, for 12th place with an even-par 144. Two other golfers, Boise State's No. 45 Troy Merritt and Clemson's No. 86 Phillip Mollica, join Grube and Kim in 12th with 144 strokes total. Oregon's Joey Benedetti retained his spot alone at the top of the leaderboard, repeating yesterday's round of 69 and putting him at six-under-par.

The Cardinal will get one more chance to improve their score and hold on to a top-10 finish tomorrow. Stanford will begin at 7:47 a.m. from the first tee. Admission to the final round is free and fans can follow along with live scoring on GolfStat.

STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 11 Stanford men's golf team is currently in ninth place after one round of play of the 2008 NCAA West Regional at the Gold Mountain Golf Course in Bremerton, Wash. Senior Rob Grube has been the best performer for the Cardinal so far, shooting a one-under-par 71.

The Pac-10 teams in the tournament are certainly making their presence felt, as four teams, No. 48 Oregon, No. 2 USC, No. 4 UCLA, and host Washington are atop the leaderboard. The Ducks hold the outright lead with a one-over-par 289, while the Trojans, Bruins, and Huskies are all knotted for second. Oregon also has a hold of the individual leaderboard, as Joey Benedetti shot a three-under par 69.

Stanford will begin second round action tomorrow at 7:18 a.m. Admission to the tournament is free.
