Stanford, Calif. - Stanford women's golf got off to an outstanding start at the Stanford Intercollegiate with a 5-under-par round of 279 on Friday. Playing in the familiar California sunshine on their home course, The Cardinal excelled with four players shooting under par.
The No.19 Cardinal sit in a tie for third with No.1 and defending national champion, USC. Stanford trails first-round leader, No. 3 UCLA, by two strokes and second-place, No. 5 Oklahoma State, by one.
The tournament includes a national caliber field with 10 of the 16 teams ranked inside the top-25.
The Cardinal were led by Angela King who opened with a 2-under-par 69. King, who was Stanford's only NCAA qualifier last season, sits in a tie for seventh. The 69 was the low round of the junior's collegiate career.
Following King was a Stanford trio made up of Sydney Burlison, Mari Chun and Rebecca Durham who each had scores of 1-under-par 70 to tie for 13th with 11 other golfers. 70 was the low round of the season for all three golfers, including Chun who won last weekend at the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational in Sammamish, Wash.
The final member of the Stanford team was Lila Barton who finished with a score of 5-over-par 76 and tied for 68th. Barton's lone birdie came on the 18th and final hole, which she will look to build on in tomorrow's round.
Also competing as individuals for Stanford were Piper Miller and Ki-Shui Liao. Miller, who was competing in her first tournament of the season, fired a 7-over-par 78 to tie for 78th. Liao finished with a 9-over-par 80 to tie for 82nd.
Caroline Masson of Oklahoma State took the early tournament lead after an impressive round of 6-under-par 65. She is trailed by Lizette Salas of USC by one stroke at 5-under.
The Stanford Intercollegiate will resume tomorrow, Oct. 18, at 8:30 am from the Stanford Golf Course. The Cardinal will look to remain in contention for the team title against the loaded field.
