Laramie, Wyo. - Ten Cardinal wrestlers, including five freshmen, finished a road trip to Wyoming today by competing in the Cowboy Open at War Memorial Fieldhouse on the University of Wyoming campus.
Leading the way for the Cardinal was redshirt freshman Nick Amuchastegui (6-1) who went 4-0, claimed his first collegiate title and upended the first ranked wrestler of his career. The Talent, Ore. native won his first two bouts by major decision, then earned a 4-1 decision over Air Force's Stephen Crozier in the 165-pound semifinals. In the championship bout, Amuchastegui upended No. 11 Tyler Sherfey of Boise State, a three-time NCAA qualifier and two-time Pac-10 runner-up, by a score of 4-2.
Junior 197-pounder Jake Johnson (9-3), the only upperclassman wrestling for the Cardinal, also placed with a 4-2 record on the day. After losing his second match, Johnson battled back all the way to the consolation final. In the third-place bout, however, he dropped a 6-1 decision to Great Falls' Alex Calvi to take fourth place.
True freshman Timmy Boone (3-3) also had a solid showing for Stanford. In his first tournament as a collegian, the 141-pounder went 3-2 with two pins and a technical fall. He earned his first collegiate victory in his opening round match, pinning Northern Colorado's Michael Threadgill in just 59 seconds.
Sophomores Porfirio Madrigal and Lucas Espericueta posted two wins apiece, while freshman Matt Sencenbaugh and sophomore Max Rosefigura each earned one.
The ten wrestlers combined for 17 wins, including four pins and 12 bonus-point victories.
The team will wrestle two duals in Southern California next Friday, taking on 2009 Pac-10 Tournament host Cal State Fullerton at 2:30 p.m. followed by Cal Baptist at 8 p.m. Stanford returns to The Farm to host No. 11 Northwestern in its home opener on Sunday at noon.
