Laramie, Wyo. - Stanford wrestlers won three of eight bouts, but were again forced to forfeit two weight classes and suffered a 34-10 loss at the hands of the Wyoming Cowboys tonight at UniWyo Sports Complex in Laramie, Wyo.
Sophomore Porfirio Madrigal remained undefeated in dual matches, besting the Cowboys' only returning NCAA qualifier in the 133-pound bout. Junior Jake Johnson and redshirt freshman Nick Amuchastegui also picked up wins for the Cardinal. Stanford wrestled with four freshmen in the lineup, including 141-pounder Timmy Boone, who made his collegiate debut.
Stanford dropped a decision at 125 pounds before Madrigal handed Cowboy junior Cory VomBaur his first loss of the year, 7-3. With three takedowns, Madrigal (5-1) topped the 2008 NCAA qualifier and knotted the team score at three.
Wyoming won the next three bouts, however, including two bonus-point victories, to run up a 16-3 lead.
Amuchastegui (2-1) scored a victory for Stanford at 165 pounds, coming from behind with a takedown in the third period to top Wyoming senior Eric Coxbill, 9-7.
Down 16-6, Stanford was pinned at 174 pounds. The Cardinal forfeit at 184 pounds locked the Wyoming win.
Johnson (5-1) put on a strong showing in the final bout, scoring Stanford's only bonus points of the day with an 11-1 major decision over freshman Alfonso Hernandez.
Stanford forfeited the bout at heavyweight and the Cowboys claimed the 34-10 victory.
Cardinal wrestlers return to the mats again tomorrow in Laramie, competing in Wyoming's Cowboy Open.
