Cal State Fullerton Bests Stanford, 31-6

Fullerton, Calif. - The Stanford wrestling team fell in its first of two duals today in Southern California, suffering a 31-6 loss at the hands of Pac-10 opponent Cal State Fullerton. Redshirt freshman Nick Amuchastegui (7-1) extended his winning streak to six consecutive matches, while sophomore Lucas Espericueta (4-3) also picked up a win for the Cardinal.

Stanford, which is scheduled to wrestle Cal Baptist later tonight, falls to 0-4 on the year with an 0-2 mark in conference. Wrestling in just its second dual of the year, Cal State Fullerton improved to 2-0 and won its first Pac-10 competition.

Just three minutes into the action, Stanford found itself in a 0-12 hole. The Cardinal forfeited the opening 174-pound bout to give Fullerton a six-point head start, and Titan junior Tim Hawkins pinned freshman Victor Haug (3-5) in 2:36 in the 184-pound bout to give his team a double-digit lead.

The Titans continued to run, winning the first eight bouts of the afternoon before Stanford finally got on the board.

At 197 pounds, returning NCAA qualifier John Drake won a 6-2 decision over Stanford's Jake Johnson (9-4), extending the Fullerton lead to 15-0. Wrestling at heavyweight for the first time in his career, two-time NCAA qualifier Luke Feist (0-1) made his season debut but dropped a 2-0 decision to Kurt Klimek.

At 125 pounds, freshman Matt Sencenbaugh (2-6) was defeated by major decision,13-5, by Titan sophomore Andre Gonzalez. Sophomore Porfirio Madrigal (7-4) then suffered his first dual loss of the year at 133 pounds, losing a 7-2 decision to Fullerton's only ranked wrestler, No. 18 TJ Dillashaw. Dillashaw's win sealed the Titan victory with four bouts to go.

Stanford lost two more decisions at 141 pounds and 149 pounds, with freshman Timmy Boone (3-4) and sophomore Max Rosefigura (4-5) falling by scores of 12-6 and 9-6, respectively.

Stanford finally got on the board in the ninth match of the afternoon, when Espericueta beat out Steven DeLaFuente in a 6-2 decision. Amuchastegui followed with another Stanford win at 165 pounds, outlasting Fullerton junior Devin Velasquez in a 9-7 overtime decision.

The Cardinal will meet the Cal Baptist Lancers in Riverside, Calif. later tonight, with the first bout scheduled to start at 8 p.m.
