Fullerton, Calif. - Junior Zack Giesen led three Cardinal wrestlers who competed unattached at the Fullerton Open today, pinning three opponents to take the 184-pound title.
Giesen, who went 4-0 on the day against four Pac-10 opponents, started fast with three consecutive pins to reach the title bout. In the championship, Giesen dominated Cal State Fullerton's Tim Hawkins, 12-1, to secure his second career tournament title. The two-time NCAA qualifier's only other championship came at the Menlo Invitational in January 2007.
Redshirt sophomore Justin Paulsen also placed in the event, taking third at 133 pounds. Paulsen opened the day with back-to-back wins by technical fall, but fell to No. 18 TJ Dillashaw of Cal State Fullerton in the championship semifinals. Paulsen battled back with a pin and a major decision in the consolation bracket, however, and claimed third place.
True freshman Spence Patrick also competed for the Cardinal. Patrick won two matches, both with bonus points, but did not place.
Stanford is back in action on Wednesday, meeting Menlo College and San Francisco State in a pair of duals at Burnham Pavilion.
