Stanford Blows Past Menlo, San Francisco State At Burnham

Nov. 27, 2008

Stanford, Calif. - The Stanford wrestling team picked up back-to-back wins tonight at Burnham Pavilion, with wrestlers winning a combined 13 bouts to cruise to victories over Menlo College and San Francisco State. The Cardinal topped the Oaks 29-15 in the first match, then took down the Gators, 24-12.

The Cardinal (3-5, 0-2 Pac-10) will wrestle in the Oklahoma Open in Norman, Okla. on Saturday before taking a break for final exams. Tonight's duals were the last of 2008 for Stanford, which resumes dual action on Jan. 3 at the Lone Star Duals in Arlington, Texas.

Sophomores Porfirio Madrigal, Max Rosefigura and Lucas Espericueta, along with redshirt freshman Nick Amuchastegui, all won both of their matches for the Cardinal. Espericueta extended his team-long winning streak to five matches, while Madrigal picked up his team-leading sixth and seventh dual wins.

Stanford, which was once again forced to forfeit a bout, won six of the nine contested weight classes in the evening's opening match against Menlo. The team then won seven of the nine against San Francisco State.

The day started at 197 pounds, where senior Luke Feist set the tone by pinning Menlo's Al Kinslow in the first period. The pin, earned in 1:23, was the 15th of Feist's career, and moved him onto the school's top 10 chart for career wins by fall.

Defending NAIA Champion Jesse Ruiz won a 9-4 decision over Jake Johnson at heavyweight, then Jose Hernandez bested freshman Matt Sencenbaugh, 7-4, at 125 pounds to tie the team score, 6-6.

Madrigal turned things around, however, earning a 13-5 major decision over Aaron Garcia at 133 pounds to start a string of five consecutive Stanford wins.

Fellow sophomore Cameron Teitelman edged Mike Righi, 7-6, at 141 pounds to bump Stanford's lead up to 13-6. Rosefigura continued the run, scoring Stanford's second pin of the night at 149 pounds. The Anchorage, Alaska native put Christian Martinez on his back in the third period (6:19) for his second pin of the year.

At 157 pounds, Espericueta won his fourth in a row, nabbing a 9-1 major decision over Josh Emmett. Amuchastegui then sealed the Stanford win, pinning Greg Alvarez in 5:17 to improve to 9-2 on the year.

Stanford freshman Victor Haug lost a decision to another defending NAIA Champion, Robert Davis, at 174 pounds. The Cardinal forfeited at 184 pounds to round out the scoring.

The Cardinal immediately turned its attention to San Francisco State, looking to pick up its third dual win of the year.

Johnson, this time wrestling at 197 pounds, earned a major decision over Vincent Bordi to start things off, scoring a 15-5 win. The victory was the junior's team-leading 12th of the year.

Stanford then suffered its only two losses, with Feist and Sencenbaugh, losing decisions at 125 pounds and heavyweight, respectively.

Madrigal once again turned things around, however, giving Stanford a lead it would never relinquish with a 15-13 overtime win at 133 pounds. Stanford proceeded to win the next five bouts in a row and wrap up the win. Freshman Timmy Boone won his first career dual match with a 7-3 decision over Joaquin Carlos at 141 pounds, then Rosefigura topped Josh Nolan, 3-1, at 149 pounds. Espericueta dominated Markham Bertron with a 20-2 technical fall, then Amuchastegui once again sealed the win with a 9-7 decision at 165 pounds.

Haug, a true freshman, closed out the night with a 3-2 win over Arman Ostadsharif at 174 pounds. Stanford once again forfeited the 184-pound bout to give the Gators their final points.

Stanford returns to the mats on Saturday, competing in the Oklahoma Open.
