Three Upsets, Three Place In Reno

Dec. 19, 2008

Reno, Nev. - Ten Cardinal wrestlers competed at the Reno Tournament of Champions today held at the Reno Downtown Convention Center in Reno, Nev. Sophomore 157-pounder Lucas Espericueta, junior 184-pounder Jake Johnson and senior 197-pounder Luke Feist all placed in the tournament, with Johnson and Feist upending ranked wrestlers along the way.

Feist paced the Cardinal, pinning three consecutive opponents and winning his first four matches to reach the 197-pound title bout. In his third match, Feist upset Edinboro's No. 19 Pat Bradshaw, pinning the junior in 4:21. Soon after, Feist toppled another ranked opponent - Cal State Bakersfield's 14th-ranked Riley Orozco - to earn a spot in the championship final. In the title match, Feist fell to another Bakersfield wrestler, Brandon Halsey, to take second place. With three pins on the day, Feist now has 21 for his career, tying him with Scott Loescher for sixth place on the school's all-time chart.

Johnson also had an impressive day, going 4-3 at 184 pounds to take sixth place. In his fourth match of the day, Johnson upset No. 15 Tim Hawkins of Cal State Fullerton, marking the first time in his career that he has taken down a ranked wrestler.

At 157 pounds, sophomore Lucas Espericueta went 6-2 on the day to take fifth place. After falling to the nation's top-ranked 157-pounder in his second bout, Espericueta battled back through the consolation bracket and earned a spot in the fifth-place match.

For all three Cardinal placers, it marked the first time in their careers that they have posted top-six finishes at the competitive Reno tournament.

Redshirt freshman Nick Amuchastegui picked up three wins for the Cardinal, while sophomore Cameron Teitelman added two to his season total. Freshman Victor Haug, along with sophomore teammates Max Rosefigura and Kyle Barrett, each also earned wins on the day.

The 10 wrestlers combined for 22 wins, including four pins and eight bonus-point victories.

The team will now break for the holidays and resume competition at the Lonestar Duals in Arlington, Texas on Jan. 3.
