After three weeks off, No. 6 Stanford returned to the court on Friday night and couldn't solve the Pepperdine Wave in a 3-0 (30-22, 30-27-31-29) decision. Sophomore Evan Romero led the Cardinal with 17 kills and sophomore Kawika Shoji added 39 assists in the defeat.
Junior All-American Paul Carroll led the Waves with 24 kills and prevented Stanford from breaking through in any of the three games. The Cardinal played a strong match, hitting .340 as a team, but the Waves hit an even higher .452 in their victory.
The second game was also won by the Waves although in a less convincing fashion. The Cardinal never led, but cut it to 27-26 late in the game before Carroll put forth two kills and eventually finished off the 30-27 victory.
The third game was extremely close as it had 27 ties and 11 lead changes. Both teams were tied at 29, but Pepperdine got two straight kills to finish off the match 31-29. Pepperdine also got five of their seven blocks in the third and final game to prevent Cardinal rallies.
The Cardinal will complete their regular season road schedule, Saturday, Mar. 30 when they travel to USC for a game at 5:00 p.m.
