Stanford Falls To No. 11 Oklahoma, 35-3

Jan. 3, 2009

Arlington, Texas - The Stanford wrestling team (3-8, 0-2 Pac-10) dropped its third and final competition to No. 11 Oklahoma today at the Lonestar Duals in Arlington, Texas. Redshirt freshman Nick Amuchastegui scored the team's only points in the 35-3 loss.

Amuchastegui (16-4), a native of Talent, Ore., finished the Lonestar Duals with a perfect 3-0 record, including two pins. The Cardinal 165-pounder now owns a team-best 9-2 dual record and leads the squad with 38 points.

Stanford wrestled in three duals over the course of the day, with the first and last beginning 12 hours apart. Stanford lost to Harvard (24-21) and Army (31-13) earlier in the event.

The dual began at 125 pounds, where Cardinal freshman Matt Sencenbaugh (5-17) fell to Oklahoma sophomore Joey Fio (No. 13), one of seven ranked wrestlers on the Sooner squad. Sencenbaugh scored 13 points in the bout, but lost by decision, 19-13.

The Sooners rattled off four more wins in a row after that, putting Stanford in a hole that it couldn't climb out of. Junior Brian Shelton pinned sophomore Austin Quarles (2-5) in the first period (2:26) in the 133-pound bout, before Cameron Teitelman (9-9) was defeated by Zack Bailey, 9-3, at 141 pounds.

Sophomore Max Rosefigura (12-12) lost a major decision to No. 14 Kyle Terry at 149 pounds, 12-3. Sophomore 157-pounder Lucas Espericueta (19-8) then dropped a decision to three-time NCAA qualifier Will Rowe, 10-5.

With the team down 19-0, Amuchastegui finally put Stanford on the board in the sixth bout, beating junior Chad Terry, 6-1, at 165 pounds.

Sophomore Kyle Barrett (4-5) fell to Oklahoma's highest ranked wrestler, No. 9 Jeff James, at 174 pounds, 12-3. James' win sealed the victory for the Sooners.

Jake Johnson (20-11) suffered a close loss to No. 19 Pat Flynn in the next bout, 6-3.

At 197 pounds, Cardinal senior Luke Feist (12-7) lost a 3-0 decision to Oklahoma's No. 13 Eric Lapotsky.

Stanford forfeited the heavyweight bout to bring the final score to 35-3.

The Cardinal returns home next weekend to host Columbia, Drexel and UC Davis in the Stanford Duals at Burnham Pavilion. Action starts at noon next Saturday, Jan. 10.
