San Francisco, Calif. - Four Stanford wrestlers competed unattached at the California Collegiates in San Francsico today, and sophomore Justin Paulsen claimed a third-place finish. The four athletes combined for 12 victories, including four pins.

Paulsen, a redshirt sophomore, highlighted the day for Stanford with a 5-1 record. The Artesia, Calif. native won three consecutive matches to advance to the 133-pound semifinals, before finally losing to eventual champion Filip Novachkov of Cal Poly. In the third-place bout, Paulsen nabbed his third pin of the day in the first period. It was the second time in Paulsen's career that he has placed at the tournament, as he also took third as a rookie in 2007.

Three Stanford true freshmen also took the mat at the tournament. Michael Kent went 3-2 and came within one match of placing at 157 pounds, while teammate Spence Patrick matched the 3-2 effort at 174 pounds. Kyler Hasson wrestled at 165 pounds and went 1-2.

Stanford returns to the mat as a team on Friday, taking on Arizona State at 7 p.m. at Burnham Pavilion.
