No. 6 Stanford Captures USC/Ashworth Collegiate Invitational Crown

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. -Led by tournament individual champion No. 32 sophomore Steve Ziegler, the No. 6 Stanford men's golf team prevailed over a 13-team field at the USC/Ashworth Collegiate Invitational to capture its first team title of the year at North Ranch C.C.

The Cardinal were one of only two teams to post a cumulative under-par total (-13, 830) and topped second-place No. 79 BYU by 10 strokes. No. 27 California checked in at third with a six-over-par 858.

Ziegler shot a nine-under-par 204 and posted the lowest round of the tournament (-6, 65) in the final round to give him the one-stroke victory over Pepperdine's Andrew Putnam. He birdied 13 holes over three rounds, including six in the back-nine in today's final round, as well as an eagle on the 15th hole in the second round.

Freshman David Chung and No. 96 sophomore Sihwan Kim also secured top-10 finishes, as Chung, who eagled No. 8 in the second round and No. 12 today, tied for fifth with a four-under-par 209, and Kim recorded two straight rounds of one-under 70 to tie for 10th at even-par 213. Kim also posted one eagle on the card, needing only three strokes on No. 15.

Senior Dodge Kemmer tied for 18th with a four-over-par 217 and junior Jordan Cox finished out the tournament with a three-over-par 74, his best round of the three, to score a 21-over-par 234.

Senior Daniel Lim, who traveled to compete as an individual, carded a six-over-par 219 to finish in a tie for 26th. Sophomore Graham Brockington finished in 77th (+22, 235). Lim and Brockington were the fourth and fifth Cardinal golfers to notch an eagle over the course of the tournament, as both only needed three strokes on No. 12 in the second round.

Stanford will next take to the links on March 22 in the Callaway Golf Collegiate Match Play Championship at The Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.

First and Second Round Results in PDF Format

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. - The sixth-ranked Stanford men's golf team is currently atop the leaderboard by two strokes after playing two rounds today at the USC/Ashworth Collegiate Invitational.

The Cardinal collectively shot an eight-under-par 560. No. 79 BYU is in second place at six-under-par, and No. 27 California is in third with a three-over-par 571.

Three Stanford golfers, sophomore Steve Ziegler, freshman David Chung, and senior Dodge Kemmer, are all tied for second place after firing a three-under-par 139 and trail leader Gregor Main (UCLA) by one stroke. Ziegler shot par (71) in the first round and followed it up with a three-under 68 in the second, while Kemmer began with a 68 and followed with a 71. Chung shot a one-over 72 in the first round and recovered to shoot the day's second lowest round of 67.

Sophomore Sihwan Kim sits solely in 22nd with a one-over-par 143, while junior Jordan Cox (76th) struggled in the first round, shooting an 85, but recovered to make up 10 strokes and shoot a four-over-par 75 in the second round.

Senior Daniel Lim, who is competing as an individual, showed very well and is tied for 15th with an even-par 142. Sophomore Graham Brockington, also competing as an individual, is in a tie for 44th with a seven-over-par 149.

Tomorrow's third and final round will begin at 7:30 a.m. Stanford will tee off beginning with Jordan Cox at 8:20 a.m. from the first tee, and is paired with UCLA, BYU, and California.
