Stanford Fencing Posts Strong Results At Mid West Invitational

South Bend, Ind. - Stanford fencing competed in the Mid-West Invitational over the weekend to great results. The women's team went a combined 7-2, while the men were 6-2. In addition, a total of 18 Stanford fencers qualified to compete in the NCAA Western Regional, which will be held at Stanford on March 7.

The women were led by Eva Jellison who finished the weekend 18-1. Jellison, a two-time All-American led the Stanford sabre corps. Also faring well in sabre was freshman Suraya Omar who went 10-9. Both Jellison and Omar advanced to the NCAA West Regionals.

The Cardinal women posted wins over UC San Diego (17-10), Air Force (15-12), Lawrence (15-3), Michigan (15-12), Cleveland State (8-3), Detroit (18-6) and Wayne State (20-7).

The lone defeats came to Notre Dame (21-6) and Northwestern (16-10).

Epee was the top weapon for Stanford as four fencers posted positive records and advanced to the NCAA West Regionals. Brittany Leader and Ashley Titan led the way, both finishing with records of 12-3. Also faring well were Katherine Lynch (12-5) and Kersten Schnurle (11-8).

Finally in women's foil Stanford was led by Jessica Wacker who went 19-3 on the weekend. Freshman Rebecca Chung also added a 16-6 mark as both advanced to the NCAA West Regionals.

The final West Regional qualifier for the Stanford women was Lianna Louie in foil to give the Cardinal a total of nine.

The men's top weapon was the sabre with Lucas Janson going 20-2 and Max Murphy finishing 19-3. Christopher Lowman also added a 13-9 weekend as all three qualified for the NCAA West Regionals.

The men recorded wins over UC San Diego (19-8), Air Force (15-12), Lawrence (13-2), Detroit (24-3), Cleveland State (24-4) and Wayne State (21-6).

Their two defeats came at the hands of Ohio State (17-10) and Notre Dame (15-12).

In foil, Alex Khoshnevissan impressed with a 19-4 record, while Dan Tucker went 15-8. Julian Jennings-White also fared well to give the Cardinal three regional qualifiers in foil.

Finally in epee Kevin Mo (10-2) and Clayton Kenney (16-6) led the way. Adding Sergey Levine the Cardinal had three regional qualifiers in epee as well.

The Cardinal next compete when they host the NCAA West Regional on March 7.
