RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. - The eighth-seeded Stanford men's golf team fell out of contention for the title at the Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championship today at The Farms G.C. in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif, losing to top-seeded Indiana 3-2 in the first round of play.
The competition didn't end for the Cardinal with the loss, as it moved on to face Texas A&M in the consolation rounds of the Championship bracket, where it defeated the Aggies 3-2.
Against the Hoosiers, senior Daniel Lim and freshman David Chung won their matches but the rest of the Stanford squad came up short in an attempt to overthrow Indiana.
Lim, who began on the third hole was even with his opponent Drew Allenspach after playing holes No. 3 and 4, but took the lead after hole No. 5 and never conceded it. Lim gained as high as a plus-4 advantage on the 15th hole, and held on to win 2 and 1.
Chung fell behind first in his match with the Hoosiers' Alex Martin after playing just two holes, but came back quickly to take the lead on hole No. 5. Chung took hold on a plus-5 lead on No. 12, and eventually finished off Martin 5 and 3.
Senior Dodge Kemmer had to continuously play catch-up with Indiana's Seth Brandon after starting on the second hole, but never fell below one-down the entire round. Kemmer took Brandon all the way to the wire, but was unable to overcome him, as Brandon went on to win 1-up.
After each man scored par on the first hole, sophomore Steve Ziegler took the lead over Hoosier Jorge Campillo, holding on to it all the way until the 15th hole, when Campillo birdied to pull even with him. Campillo went on to steal the match 2 and 1.
Sophomore Sihwan Kim fell behind early to David Erdy, but was able to square up with him on holes No. 6, 8, and 10, before finally conceding to the Indiana golfer for good. Erdy won the match 3 and 2.
Against Texas A&M, Kim beat John Hurley 4 and 3 after grasping the lead and never relinquishing it, while Bronson Burgoon ran away with the match 7 and 6 over Ziegler, tying things at one-all.
Kemmer defeated Conrad Shindler 2-up, never falling behind and only pulling even three times, while Andrea Pavan narrowly edged Chung, who fell behind at the start, 1-up. Lim battled back and forth with Matt Van Zandt, always holding the lead but never by more than two, and finished all 18 holes 2-up to secure the Cardinal victory.
Stanford will play San Diego State, who dropped Texas Tech 3-2, in the consolation final tomorrow morning.
