Top-Ranked Cardinal Sweeps To Pair Of Victories Sunday

March 8, 2009

DAVIS, Calif. - No. 1 Stanford improved to 15-1 overall this season after cruising to a pair of big wins at the Aggie Shootout Sunday. The Cardinal opened the day with a 12-5 victory over UC Davis, then concluded the day with an 18-3 rout of CS Bakersfield.

Kelly Eaton and Alyssa Lo scored a pair of goals in each contest to lead Stanford, while Emily Clopp posted a hat trick in the second contest, against CS Bakersfield. Alex Koran, Melissa Seidemann and Lauren Silver each notched a two-goal game on the day as well.

Amber Oland and Kim Hall split the day's contests in the cage, with Oland holding UC Davis to five goals and stopping seven shots while Hall also made seven saves against CS Bakersfield while limiting the Roadrunners to just three goals.

Stanford opened the day by darting out to a 3-1 lead after the opening period against UC Davis. Although the teams would each score three times in the second period, leaving the Cardinal with a slim 6-4 advantage at halftime, Stanford's defense would step up and shut the Aggies out in the third period. While the defense was clamping down, the offense took advantage, scoring four goals to go up 10-4 and put things out of reach.

In the late afternoon, the Cardinal followed the same formula that had worked so well earlier, getting out to another fast start by scoring five first-period goals to go up 5-0 after eight minutes. The defense again did its job well, limiting CS Bakersfield's chances while the offense built a 12-1 halftime lead.

The attack continued in the second half, as the Cardinal outscored the Roadrunners, 6-2, the rest of the way.

Against the Roadrunners, Koree Blyleven, Mimi Bury, Allie Gerrity, Jenna Gunderson, Kira Hillman and Pallavi Menon registered their lone goals of the day. Kim Krueger and Jessica Steffens also scored earlier in the day against UC Davis.

The Cardinal now heads into a two-week break for final exams, and will return to action March 21 at home against Harvard.
