STANFORD, Calif. - Arizona (18-19, 4-12 Pac-10) broke a scoreless tie with a four-run fourth inning and rolled to an 11-1 victory over host Stanford (17-17, 7-9) in the opener of a three-game Pac-10 series at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond. The Cardinal has now lost its last four Pac-10 contests after winning six of its previous nine conference games.
Given a 4-0 lead in the fourth and a 6-0 lead in the fifth, Arizona starter Preston Guilmet (3-4) cruised to the win. The senior right-hander worked 7.0 innings, holding Stanford to just one run on five hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Guilmet blanked the Cardinal through the first 5.2 innings, before Toby Gerhart ended the shutout bid with a long home run to left - his fourth of the season.
Eight of the nine Arizona starters had at least one hit, while Brad Glenn finished 3-for-5 with three runs scored, a solo home run and three RBI. Dwight Childs also scored three runs and drove in three, going 2-for-3 with a walk.
Stanford starter Jordan Pries (3-1) kept Arizona off the scoreboard through the first three innings before running into trouble in the fourth, when the Wildcats sent 10 men to the plate and scored four runs. The first five Arizona batters of the inning reached base but, with two runs across and the bases loaded, Pries came close to escaping further damage. An infield pop left the bases full with one out, but the inning turned during the next two batters. Hunter Pace hit a twisting foul pop down the right field line that first baseman Brent Milleville nearly caught over his shoulder, but had it fall out of his glove; one pitch later, Pace delivered a sacrifice fly. Jett Bandy then followed with a sinking liner that right fielder Kellen Kiilsgaard came close to catching on a dive, but the ground jarred the ball loose for a RBI-single. Pries pitched into the fifth, but suffered the first loss of his collegiate career after opening 3-0.
Arizona added two runs in the fifth, two in the seventh and three more in the eighth, as the Wildcats pounded out 14 hits on the night. Stanford pitchers walked six batters, hit three and threw a pair of wild pitches, while the Cardinal committed two errors and had a pair of passed balls.
Gerhart's homer was one of six Stanford hits on the night, and the only one for extra bases. Colin Walsh, however, reached base safely for the 17th straight game and extended his career-best hitting streak to 12 games with a single in the first. Milleville, Ben Clowe, Adam Gaylord and pinch-hitter Christian Griffiths also singled, but two Stanford baserunners were caught stealing and another was erased on a double play.
Stanford and Arizona will meet in the second contest of this three-game series on Saturday afternoon, with Cardinal freshman left-hander Brett Mooneyham (3-2, 4.58) squaring off against Wildcats freshman righty Kyle Simon (2-3, 6.07).
