Stanford Falls Short At NCAA Central Regional

Columbus, Ohio - Difficult conditions mired Saturday's final round of the NCAA Central Regional as Stanford failed to qualify for the NCAA Championships. The Cardinal struggled to a round of 44-over-par 332 to finish in 14th place. Only the top eight teams will go on to compete at the NCAA's.

Stanford finished the tournament at 82-over-par 946, 24 strokes out of the eighth place and the final NCAA qualifier, Tennessee Chattanooga.

UCLA won the tournament with a score of 13-over-par 877. The Bruins played Saturday at 15-over-par, after being under par for the first two rounds. Their Saturday round was still the best of the day, showing difficulty of play during the final round.

Purdue finished as the runner-up at 32-over-par 877, while Wake Forest was third at 35-over-par 880. Oklahoma State, Michigan State, New Mexico and Ohio State placed fourth through seventh to also qualify for the NCAA Championships.

Stanford's top individual finishers were Sydney Burlison and Rebecca Durham who finished tied for 51st. Burlison had a difficult time on Saturday after two great rounds to start the tournament. Her 14-over-par 86 gave her a three-day total of 19-over-par 235 for the tournament. Durham finished the tournament with a 10-over-par 82 to have the same total as Burlison.

Stanford freshman Lila Barton equaled her classmate, Burlison with an 86 on Saturday to finish in a tie for 69th. Barton completed her first Regional with a score of 24-over-par 240 for the tournament.

The best round of the day for Stanford came from senior Mari Chun who was playing her final round at Stanford. Chun shot an eight over par 80 to finish at 26-over-par 242 for the tournament and tied for 78th place.

Rounding out the Stanford squad was Angela King who finished tied for 89th with a three-day total of 30-over-par 246. King shot a 12-over-par 84 on Saturday for her final round.

The completion of the NCAA West Regional from the Scarlet Golf Course ends the 2008-09 season for Stanford. The Cardinal failed to qualify for the NCAA Championships for the second consecutive season.
