ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The second-ranked Stanford men's water polo team opened its 2009 campaign in resounding fashion at the Navy Open Saturday, outscoring its two opponents by a combined 34 goals en route to a doubleheader sweep. Stanford started the day with a 22-7 rout of the Bucknell Bison before sewing up its nightcap with a 20-1 victory over Johns Hopkins.
Stanford continues action at the Navy Open tomorrow with another doubleheader, facing George Washington at 6:50 a.m. PT before closing out the weekend against host Navy at 12:40 p.m. PT.
Drac Wigo led the Cardinal with eight goals on the day, while Janson Wigo netted six. Senior Ryan McCarthy totaled five goals while junior Jeffrey Schwimer, redshirt freshman Travis Noll and freshman Paul Rudolph each scored four times. A pair of hat tricks were also turned in against Johns Hopkins by redshirt freshmen Noll and Ryan Brown.
Goalies Jimmie Sandman and Scott Platshon both saw action Saturday, with Sandman making 12 saves total and Platshon stopping eight shots.
In Saturday's opener, the Cardinal jumped all over the Bison, getting out to a 6-0 lead after the opening eight minutes. The onslaught continued into the second period as Stanford took a commanding 12-2 lead into the break.
Eleven more goals in the second half helped put away the contest as the Cardinal cruised to its first victory of the year. Jacob Smith and Will Smith would each score twice in the game while Alex Pulido tacked on a goal as well.
On defense, Sandman worked the first three periods, making nine saves, before giving way to Platshon, who made three saves over the final period.
Later, facing Johns Hopkins, Stanford would get off to an identical start, going up 6-0 on the Blue Jays by the end of the first period. Seven more goals in the second period against just one for JHU would make it 13-1 at the half, clearing the way for the Cardinal to finish off the day's sweep.
Pulido added two goals to the haul in the nightcap while Will Smith added a score. In the cage, Sandman and Platshon each played a half, with Sandman making three saves in the first half and Platshon stopping five shots over the third and fourth periods.
