Stanford Squash Finishes Seventh At Howe Cup

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - No. 7 Stanford women's squash completed their final weekend at the Howe Cup of the CSA National Women's Team Championships, hosted by the Harvard at the Barnaby Courts. The Cardinal went 1-2 on the weekend to finish the season in seventh place nationally to match their previous best effort, established last season.

In the opening round, the Cardinal took on No. 2 Harvard who won the first eight matches and held on for an 8-1 victory Friday in the quarterfinal.

With the teams using a three-court system, Alisha Mashruwala of Harvard opened the action with a 3-0 victory against Samantha Buechner at the No. 3 position, winning 9-1, 9-2 and 9-0. Johanna Snyder followed at the No. 6, picking up the first two games 9-3 and 9-6. Her opponent, Aditi Maliwal, won the third game, 9-6, but Snyder clinched the match with a 9-5 decision in the following set.

At the No. 9, Sandra Mumanachit held off Shannon Harrington, 9-6, in their first game before rattling off back-to-back 9-1 wins for a 3-0 victory. Emily Park faced a competitive battle with Katy Brewster at the No. 2 spot, holding on for a 3-2 decision. Brewster opened their match with a 9-7 win, before Park fought back to take the next two sets, 9-5 and 9-0. Brewster tied the match in the fourth game, 9-5, but Park scored early and often in the fifth game, outlasting Brewster, 9-2.At the No. 5 position, Bethan Williams also picked up a 3-2 win, as she topped Katie Corelli. Williams took the first game, 10-8, before falling dropping the next two (9-0 and 9-4). Williams remained focused and outscored Corelli down the stretch, 9-2 and 9-6, to clinch the team match for Harvard.

Stanford's lone win came at the No. 7 slot, as Kyla Sherwood got the best of Cece Cortes, 3-0 (9-5, 9-8, 9-6).

The Crimson then rattled off three consecutive 3-0 victories at the No. 8, 1 and 4 slots. At the No. 8, Alexandra Zindman shut down Leah Stork by scores of 9-5, 9-8 and 9-6, while Nirasha Guruge downed Stanford's No. 1, Lilly Lorentzen, 9-1, 9-0 and 9-6. Katherine O'Donnell gave Harvard its eighth win of the day when she defeated Cecilia Haig, 3-0 (9-4, 9-0, 9-4).

In the second round, No. 6 Cornell defeated Stanford, 6-3. At the No. 2 position Shivangi Paranjpe defeated Katy Brewster, 3-2. Paranjpe won the first two games, 9-7, 9-7, but her opponent rallied back to tie the match with a 9-6 and 9-7 win in games three and four. The Big Red player secured the victory with a 9-1 win in the fifth and final set.

The Big Red's Jen Gemmell and Liza Stokes defeated their opponents, 3-0, at the No. 3 and No. 4 positions, respectively. At the No. 5 spot, Alex Cornett traded games back and forth with Katie Corelli, but Cornett picked up a 9-4 victory in the fifth set to notch the win. Lauren Sachvie edged out Aditi Maliwal 10-9 in her first set, then posted commanding 9-5 and 9-2 wins in games two and three to win at the No. 6 position. At No. 9, Izzy Spyrou faltered only in the second game, to win a 3-1 match over Shannon Harrington.

In the final match, Stanford came through with a 7-2 win over No. 8 Williams College. The win clinched the seventh place national finish for the Cardinal. In the No. 1 match Lily Lorentzen fell to Toby Eyre of Williams 3-0, before the Cardinal rattled off three straight wins. Katy Brewster and Samantha Buechner each won their matches 3-1, before Celia Haig swept her opponent 3-0 in the No. 4 slot.

Caroline Henry rallied for the second Williams win in the No. 5 spot over Caroline Henry 4-1, before Stanford dominated the rest of the match.

Aditi Maliwal led three straight Stanford sweeps in the No. 6 spot. Kyla Sherwood and Leah Stork followed suit a the No. 7 and 8 spots to clinch victory for Stanford.

Shannon Harrington rounded out play for Stanford with a 3-1 win over Julia Reiser of Williams to give the Cardinal the 7-2 final.
