LONG BEACH, Calif-- No. 1-ranked Stanford took over the lead on the second of four days of the Pac-10 Women's Swimming Championships at Belmont Plaza, paced by a school-record by Julia Smit in the 200 individual medley, a win by Betsy Webb in the 50 freestyle and a win for the nation's fastest 200 freestyle relay team.
Smit's time of 1:52.31 broke her own American and NCAA record in the event, set at last year's NCAA Championships.
The Cardinal, with 510 points, are in first place, followed by Cal (476), USC (435) and Arizona (352).
Smit became the Cardinal's first three-time Pac-10 Champion in the 200 IM, as she, Elaine Breeden (third) and Liz Smith (fourth) dominated the eight team finals. Smit's time of 1:52.31, broke her previous best, set of 1:52.79. She was three seconds ahead of USC's Katinka Hosszu (1:55.49), Breeden (1:55.96) and Smith (1:56.24).
The nation's fastest 200 free relay team did not disappoint in the finals, as Webb, Sam Woodward, Kate Dwelley and Smit posted a best of 1:28.27 to finish in front of Cal to close out day two.
Webb also won the 50 free with a career-best of 22.04, moving her into third place all-time in that event and breaking her best of 22.37. Dwelley (fourth), Woodward (sixth) and freshman Andi Murez (seventh) also made in the finals racking up 105 points in just that event for Stanford. Webb is the first Cardinal winner of the shortest course since Brooke Bishop in 2006.
Junior Kelsey Ditto had the top preliminary time at 4:42.02, and bettered that mark to 4:41.92 to finish third in the 500 freestyle.
Also competing in Federal Way, WA was the team's diving programs, with Meg Hostage finishing fourth (292.30) and Carmen Stellar seventh (264.40) in the finals of the one-meter. Brent Eichenseer finished fourth in the three-meter (382.00), with his points pushed to the men's conference championship starting on March 3.
The Championships run through Saturday as the Cardinal look for its first conference title since 2005.
