Stanford Competes In New Mexico

Albuquerque, N.M. - A small group of Stanford track and field athletes traveled to the New Mexico Classic and Combined Events. The meet was an opportunity for some young multi-event athletes to get their first collegiate experience.

Despite the multi-event flavor to the meet, Katerina Stefanidi stole the show in the pole vault. Stefanidi improved her own school record by clearing 14-0 to tie for the meet title. Stefanidi improved her NCAA automatic standard and became the first Stanford female over 14 feet. Also competing was Natasha Barthel who finished sixth with a mark of 12-7 1/2.

In the pentathlon, freshman Tiffany Tillet made her debut. Tillet placed 24th with a score of 3,091 points. Tillett's top performance came in the 60-meter hurdles where she placed eighth with a time of 9.20.

A pair of freshmen made their Stanford debuts in the heptathlon. Darien Bailey placed 15th with a score of 4,558, while Kevin Cardey placed 16th with a score of 4,475. Bailey excelled in the shot put where he had the fifth-best score of the day with a mark of 39-2 1/2. Cardey had the sixth-best score of the day in the long jump where he had a mark of 21-10.

Competing in the 60 and 200 meters was Mark Mueller. Mueller placed 10th with a time of 7.00 seconds in the 60 and 11th with a time of 22.27 in the 200.

Next up for Stanford is a pair of meets next weekend. Stanford is scheduled to compete in both the Tyson Invitational in Fayettevill, Ark. and the Husky Classic in Seattle, Wash. Both meets are Friday, Feb. 12 and Saturday, Feb. 13.
