AUSTIN, Texas-- Stanford juniors Meg Hostage and Brent Eichenseer are both headed to the NCAA Championships following three days of diving at the Zone E Regional Championships.
Hostage, needing help to qualify for one of six spots, secured her third-straight NCAA Championship, with a second place finish in the platform. Eichenseer, who had been fifth in each the one and three-meters, finished fourth in the platform and secured the fifth of seven slots on the men's side. It will be Eichenseer's second-straight NCAA Championship.
Hostage tallied a score of 545.25 in the platform finals, her best finish since winning the event as a freshman two years ago. Arizona State's Alina Eggers won the event with a score of 612.30. Eichenseer finished with 701.05 points as ASU's Riley McCormick won the event with a score of 905.40, as the next four competitors were separated by 45 points, well behind McCormick.
Hostage's best dive was a forward 3 ½ somersault pike from 10 meters, where she tallied 387.30 points, paced by two 7.5's and three 7.0's amongst the five judges. She also managed a score over 60 with a back 2 ½ somersault 1/12 twist pike (62.40) from 10 meters and an inward 2 ½ somersault tuck (60.45) from five meters.
Eichenseer closed out the meet with a tally of 74.20 with a reverse 2 ½ somersault tuck off the seven-meter platform, receiving three 9.0's and an 8.5 amongst the five judges. He also scored a 70.40 on a back 2 ½ somersault 1 ½ twist pike from 10 meters paced by three 7.5's.
Stanford senior Carmen Stellar closed out her All-American career by finishing seventh with a score of 494.30. The Arcadia, Calif. native won the Pac-10 title as a junior, garnering All-America honors that same year in the platform.
Diving coach Rick Schavone, in his 32nd year, has produced 87 All-Americans and eight NCAA champions over his tenure. Eichenseer and Hostage, both previous All-Americans, are amongst a group of divers who have been named All-America in 26 of the last 27 years.
The women's NCAA Championships begin on March 18 in West Lafayette, Ind., while the men's event begins on March 26 in Columbus, Ohio. Both teams won the Pac-10 team titles.
