Chicago, Ill. - No. 2 Stanford completed its regular season with a big win over Illinois-Chicago on Friday night in the Windy City. The Cardinal won on all six apparatuses easily defeating the Flames, 360.0-342.6. Stanford`s depth was on display as a different Cardinal gymnast won each event.
The Cardinal fell to No. 2 in the nation based on the point system earlier in the week, despite defeating the new No. 1, Oklahoma, just two weeks ago. The Cardinal are also undefeated against collegiate teams this season.
The top scores of the day for Stanford came on vault. Eddie Penev led the Cardinal with a score of 16.3 to help Stanford to a team score of 63.3 in the event. Alex Buscaglia and Abhinav Ramani also chipped in scores of 15.75.
In the floor exercise, Stanford posted its best score of the year with 61.7 points. This time it was Buscaglia and Penev sharing the top score of 15.7. Josh Dixon was also well over points with a score of 15.55.
In the rings, Stanford was led by Tim Gentry with a score of 15.5. Gentry led Stanford to a score of 60.4 on the apparatus in which Stanford has been so strong all year. Freshman James Fosco continued to shine on rings with a score of 15.45.
Dixon led the way on pommel horse with a score of 14.45. Eric Hergenrader also added a score of 14.35 as the Cardinal scored a 57.2.
The other event winners for Stanford were Ryan Lieberman on parallel bars (15.2) and Ramani on high bar (15.0). The Cardinal scored a 58.9 on parallel bars, while scoring a 58.5 on high bar.
The meet with Illinois-Chicago concludes the regular season for Stanford. Next up is the MPSF Championships in two weeks. The meet hosted by the Oklahoma will take place on Saturday, April 3. The Cardinal will attempt to win a conference title for the second consecutive season.
