Defense Rules The Day As Cardinal Sweep Doubleheader By Combined 28-2 Score

March 7, 2010

DAVIS, Calif. - For the third and fourth times this weekend, the defense of the No. 2 Stanford women's water polo team put in a clinic in clamping down on an opponent, allowing just two goals in a doubleheader sweep of CS Bakersfield and No. 15 UC Davis Sunday in Davis.

The Cardinal (16-1, 2-0 MPSF) opened the day with a 17-1 victory over CS Bakersfield, then finished up the weekend by defeating the host Aggies, 11-1. Stanford will now take a two-week hiatus from action due to final exams, returning on March 21 with a home contest against Arizona State at Avery Aquatic Center.

Kelly Eaton led the Cardinal with seven goals over the two victories, while Vee Dunlevie posted a hat trick in the morning win over CS Bakersfield.

In the cage, Kate Baldoni and Kim Hall each played two periods in the morning, with Baldoni making seven saves and Hall making four. Junior Amber Oland played the entire game against UC Davis, stopping five shots and allowing just one goal.

Stanford opened its day by scoring four first-period goals against the Roadrunners, then added five more unanswered goals in the second frame to take a commanding 9-0 lead at the half. The Roadrunner managed to get their only goal in the third period, but Stanford would score four of its own in the frame to go up 13-1 and cruise to the win.

Eaton and Dunlevie eached scored three times to pace the Cardinal, while Cassie Churnside, Kim Krueger and Pallavi Menon each scored twice. Additional goals were scored by Annika Dries, Victoria Kennedy, Alex Koran, Alexis Lee and Melissa Seidemann.

Hours later, the Cardinal returned to the pool for the second leg of its doubleheader, against the host Aggies. Again, four first-period goals got the Cardinal out to a quick lead, as the Aggies could only answer with one of their own in the opening eight minutes. A goal in the second period would give Stanford a 5-1 lead at the break.

From there, Stanford would add six more goals in the second half to complete the victory, as Oland went the distance, making five saves.

Eaton led the Cardinal once again in scoring, finding the back of the cage four times. Seidemann and Alyssa Lo each scored twice, while Koran, Kelsey Holshouser and Jessica Steffens each found the back of the cage once.
