SEATTLE-- Despite a career-high 13 strikeouts ,Brett Mooneyham (1-5) was the hard luck loser on Friday night as Washington (22-19, 6-7 Pac-10) won the opener over visiting No. 18-ranked Stanford (21-15, 10-6 Pac-10) 4-2.
The lefthander threw all eight innings for the Cardinal, giving up just four runs (two earned) on four hits, while walking two. Mooneyham finished his night by striking out seven of the final eight, which began with the the final two Huskies in the sixth, the side in the seventh and the first two batters in the eighth.
Forrest Snow (4-1), who came on in the fifth, pitched 2.2 shutout innings with three strikeouts for the win. Jacob Clem then pitched the final 2.0 innings for his fifth save.
Two errors led to two runs in the first, as a dropped foul pop up extended the inning for Pierce Rankin, before his two-run home run gave the Huskies a 2-0 lead. A squeeze in the fourth then made it 3-0.
A two-run double by Stephen Piscotty cut the UW lead to 3-2 in the fifth off of starter Geoff Brown, before the Huskies found a run on an RBI groundout in the bottom of the inning.
Saturday's game will be at 6:30 p.m at Safeco Field, the home of the Mariners with RHP Jordan Pries (3-1, 3.39) against RHP Andrew Kittredge (5-3, 5.97). Sunday's game will be back at Husky Ballpark at 12 p.m.
NOTES: Kenny Diekroeger extended his hit streak to 10 games with a second inning single, tying Piscotty for the longest streak on the season... Mooneyham has struck out at least six in seven of his 13 starts. He struck out 10 last weekend against Cal... Stanford Sailing is also in Seattle for the National Dinghy Semifinals this Saturday and Sunday.
