Stanford's women's golf team finds itself tied for ninth place after shooting an opening round team score of 297 today at the PING/ASU Invitational being contested at the Karsten Course in Tempe, Ariz.
The Cardinal will enter tomorrow's second round 18 strokes behind first place and host Arizona State, which shot nine-under 279 today. USC is in second place at 281 (-7), while Purdue is in third after carding a one-under 287.
Alabama, UCLA, New Mexico and Denver are tied for fourth at three-over 291.
Stanford freshman Sally Watson shot an opening round 71 and is tied for 11th place, three strokes behind co-leaders Carlotta Ciganda of Arizona State and Kristina Merkle of Tulsa.
Watson birdied holes No. 1 and 15 this morning and had just one one bogey on her card.
Senior Angela King is tied for 38th after shooting a two-over 74.
Rebecca Durham and Kristina Wong are tied for 55th after each player shot an opening round score of 76. Durham's round was highlighted by an eagle on the par-5, 14th hole.
Sydney Burlison is tied for 77th after shooting an seven over 79.
Tomorrow's second round will tee-off at 8:00 a.m.
